Contraception and HRT coverage in Saskatchewan

What Saskatchewan's public drug programs cover for contraception and menopause hormone therapy (HRT — clinically, menopausal hormone therapy or MHT), sourced from the province's own program pages.

Contraception

Partial coverage

Partially covered — a real program exists, but it is not free or universal.

NOT free/universal. No federal pharmacare deal signed. Saskatchewan's Health Minister stated the province was "content with where we are right now" and had no plans to move to universal coverage; no policy change or federal deal has been found through July 2026, so contraception remains accessible only via the general (income-tested) Saskatchewan Drug Plan or private insurance.

What this means for what you pay

A real coverage program exists, but expect a deductible, copay, or coinsurance, and/or an income or age eligibility test — see the plan name above for what to ask your pharmacist about.

Menopause hormone therapy (MHT / HRT)

Partial coverage

Partially covered — a real program exists, but it is not free or universal.

NOT free, but formulary access improved: effective March 1, 2026, key MHT products (Climara, Divigel, Estradot + generics, Estrogel, Estalis) moved from Exception Drug Status to Full Formulary Benefit under the Saskatchewan Formulary, removing special-authorization paperwork. Still subject to the standard Saskatchewan Drug Plan deductible/co-pay — no free/universal MHT program exists.

Effective date: March 1, 2026
